THE CAREERBRIO RESUME GUIDE

How to tailor your resume to a job description.

Bring the right experience forward. Use the job posting to decide what to emphasize, then support every change with something you have actually done.

1. Read for the work, not just the keywords.

Start with the responsibilities, required skills, and tools. Separate what the employer needs from what would be nice to have. Highlight repeated requirements, but read them in context: a tool mentioned once as essential can matter more than a repeated generic phrase.

Keep a master resume with your full experience. Make a copy for this application so you can select relevant examples without losing the rest.

2. Match each requirement to evidence.

Write down what you can demonstrate before editing. A gap is useful information; it is not permission to add a skill you do not have.

Fictional candidate: match the role to actual experience
The role asks forThe candidate has doneWhat to put on the resume
Email supportAnswered customer billing questions by emailA bullet naming the channel and issue type
Weekly Excel reportingUsed Excel to summarize recurring billing issues each weekThe tool, reporting cadence, and report subject
Finance coordinationSent disputed invoices to the finance team for reviewA specific handoff, without claiming ownership of the resolution
Zendesk preferredNo Zendesk experienceLeave Zendesk out; explain relevant support experience if asked

3. Rewrite the summary and strongest bullets.

Lead with the work that matches this role. You can reorder bullets, shorten unrelated details, and use the employer's terminology when it accurately describes your experience. Keep your real job titles, dates, and responsibilities.

BEFORE

A generic summary

Hardworking professional with strong communication skills looking for a new opportunity.
AFTER

A role-relevant summary

Customer support professional with experience answering billing questions by email, preparing weekly Excel reports, and coordinating invoice reviews with finance.
BEFORE

Responsibilities without context

Helped customers and made reports. Worked with other teams.
AFTER

Specific work the candidate can explain

  • Answered customer billing questions by email and referred disputed invoices to finance for review.
  • Prepared weekly Excel reports summarizing recurring billing issues.

The rewrite uses only the facts in the evidence table. It adds no invented percentage improvement, seniority, or software experience. If you have a verified outcome or workload figure, include it with enough context to explain what it measures.

4. Use AI to suggest edits, then verify them.

Give the tool your resume, the posting, and any additional facts you can verify. Ask it to explain each change so you can reject unsupported claims. Remove personal details that are unnecessary for the exercise.

A reusable tailoring prompt

Compare the job description below with my resume. Identify the main requirements and the experience in my resume that supports each one. List gaps separately. Suggest a revised summary and relevant experience bullets using only the facts I supplied. Do not invent skills, employers, dates, metrics, job titles, or responsibilities. For every edit, show the original text, the proposed version, and why it helps. Ask me about missing evidence instead of filling it in.

Resume: [paste your resume]
Job description: [paste the posting]
Additional verified facts: [add facts you can explain in an interview]

Compare resume to job description by meaning, not just by counting repeated words. A missing phrase may describe a real skill gap, or it may be a different name for work you have done. Read the proposed changes yourself before deciding.

5. Check the version you will send.

  • Confirm every tool, number, title, and accomplishment against your experience.
  • Make the most relevant work easy to find in the summary and first bullets.
  • Use clear sections and readable formatting; open the exported file to inspect it.
  • Follow the employer's file-format instructions and proofread your contact details.
  • Keep a copy of the resume and posting so you can prepare for an interview.

Tailoring helps explain relevance. It does not guarantee an interview or a particular score in an applicant tracking system, the software employers use to manage applications.
